How it works:

It selects the most promising thoughts to continue the search. It can pursue multiple paths simultaneously and return to previous steps if necessary. It's like a team of experts working together on a complex task and learning from each other.
Difference from Chain of Thought (CoT):
Chain of Thought (CoT) encourages LLMs to explain their thought process step by step. This often leads to better results. However, CoT follows only a single line of reasoning. ToT can pursue multiple paths concurrently and is more flexible, as it can backtrack and examine alternatives when needed. ToT is thus better suited for more complex problems than CoT.
Example Prompt (Business Scenario):
Imagine three marketing experts working on a new campaign. Each expert notes down a step of their thought process and shares it with the team. Then, all experts move on to the next step. If an expert realizes they're on the wrong track, they leave the discussion. The goal is to develop a marketing strategy for a new product. The first question is: What are the core messages we want to convey?
This example prompt shows how ToT prompting can be used to get an LLM to consider different strategies, much like a team of experts in a company. This "expert discussion" can lead to a better outcome.
