OpenAI has unveiled three new voice AI models: gpt-4o-transcribe, gpt-4o-mini-transcribe, and gpt-4o-mini-tts. These models expand on the existing GPT-4o capabilities but with enhanced audio features. The mini versions offer similar functionality at just 25% of the cost of their full-sized counterparts.

What's New: The new models are variants of GPT-4o that OpenAI has post-trained with additional data to excel at transcription and speech. They include streaming speech-to-text capabilities that let developers continuously input audio and receive real-time text responses. The models feature noise cancellation and a semantic voice activity detector that knows when a speaker has finished a thought. This improves transcription accuracy. The gpt-4o-transcribe models show impressively low error rates across languages - just 2.46% in English. The text-to-speech model also allows for voice customization. Users can modify accents, pitch, tone, and emotional qualities through simple text prompts.

Business Impact: Companies can now add voice interactions to existing text-based applications with minimal code changes - about nine lines according to OpenAI. This means even businesses with limited technical resources can enhance customer experiences. EliseAI, a property management automation company, reported that the enhanced voices led to higher tenant satisfaction and improved call resolution rates. Decagon, which builds AI voice experiences, saw a 30% improvement in transcription accuracy.
